In Memory Wendell Berry

As a photographer, Jim over the years took thousands of photographs of Wendell, his family and his land. Wendell and his family have farmed the land in Henry County for generations. His great-great grandfather purchased 500 acres of land after he fought in the War of 1812.

On a recent visit to Port Royal only weeks before his death by the Foundation’s Managing Director Larry Pemble, Wendell said to him his greatest accomplishment, the thing he was most proud of, was his entire family was close to him with five generations living and many generations past.

Today, through The Berry Center, founded in 2011 by his daughter Mary, Wendell’s writings are put to work to advocate for farmers, land conserving communities and healthy regional economies. The commitment of The Berry Center to Wendell’s powerful writings and observations will continue his legacy for generations to come.
