On his second stint at the University of Kentucky, Steve was also chosen for a Gaines Fellowship from the Gaines Center for Humanities. “That time at UK changed my life and certainly my view of the world,” Steve says. “It was a deeply creative time for me. I was taking the creative writing classes with Jim and listening and learning with the opportunities as a Gaines Fellow.”
“My second time around at UK, I was married and much older than most of the students. Jim was a friend as well as a teacher and it was good to have an older friend and mentor at that time. Jim and I played a lot of tennis (he was a strong player!). Camy and I went out to see Jim and Mary Ann at their farm several times . . . we both enjoyed their company.”
And what would you say to James Baker Hall today? “I would tell him what an influence he had on my work. Today, Camy and I often talk about that time and the talent and kindness of Jim Hall. In an indirect way, what I absorbed at UK during this time has been passed to my daughters who are both creative thinkers and have an expansive world view.”
