Kentucky Writer’s Day Celebration April 24th in Frankfort
According to Leeann Potter, Program Specialist at the Kentucky Arts Council, this year’s activities will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Capitol Rotunda with the induction ceremony for the 2025-2027 Kentucky Poet Laureate with a reception afterwards. Festivities resume at 2:30 p.m. at the Paul Sawyer Library, 319 Wapping Street, Frankfort and will feature readings by the Kentucky Youth Poet Laureate and others.
Lori Meadows, who retired from the Kentucky Arts Council, was over the Poet Laureate program when James Baker Hall served his two year term. “I was very fond of Jim,” states Meadows. “He was so passionate about the Poet Laureate program and took his responsibilities very seriously.”
Even after his term expired, he continued to be invested. “Prior to his term, the Poet Laureate was selected by a committee, but Jim suggested and believed that the other Poet Laureates should make the selection because they knew what the responsibilities entailed." That change was made and continues today.
It seems poignant, that April . . . Jim’s birth month . . . be shared with an event like Kentucky Writer’s Day. Come join the foundation as we celebrate Kentucky writers past and present in Frankfort on April 24th.
